Delaware fish and wildlife agents have released a female bald eagle found entangled in briars over the weekend.

Sr. Cpl. Douglas Messeck and Cpl. David Ptak drove the bird - thumping loudly inside a large pet carrier - to the Indian River School District's Nature Center near Millsboro on Wednesday morning.

As Millsboro Middle School seventh graders watched, the agents opened the pet carrier. The eagle paused briefly before soaring over the children and into a tree beside Ingrams Pond.

Hunters spotted the bird trapped in briars near Harrington on Saturday. Messeck and Ptak freed the bird and took her to Tri-State Bird Rescue in Newark.

Staff there treated the eagle for low-level lead exposure and said the bird had no other injuries or illnesses.
