SEATTLE -- American charities have seen a significant drop in giving already this year and the holidays aren't looking much better.
A new survey suggests they'll probably see a decrease in year-end generosity. A report due out tomorrow from Harris Interactive finds only 38 percent of Americans say they are more likely to give a charitable gift as a holiday present this year, compared to 49 percent last year.
It says about the same number of Americans are giving to charity these days, but they are giving fewer dollars.
The survey suggests there is some hope, but farther down the road. Seventy-four percent of respondents said they plan to increase their charitable giving once the economy improves.
The Chronicle of Philanthropy says the nation's most successful fundraising organizations are expecting incomes to decline by an average of 9 percent this year.
