NEW YORK (WABC) -- Tens of thousands of dollars are being awarded to dozens of schools across New York City.
The money is a reward for schools that received top scores under a controversial new grading system.
Education reporter Art McFarland has details.
P.S. 46, in Bayside was singled out today as one of the schools being rewarded with cash for good performance. Schools Chancellor Joel Klein says these rewarded schools are deserving.
Queens led the way for school rewards. Only 134 city schools are getting the rewards.
To qualify, schools must earn an a on the new progress report and a "well-developed" quality review, which was done by outside observers.
The money comes to about $30 dollars per student. Schools get from about four thousand to more than $122,000 dollars, depending on enrollment, for a total of $3.4 million dollars.
P.S. 46 has its own funding priorities. The school's principal says she will spend money on technology and books.
Klein today was faced with surprise criticism from Queens Assemblyman Mark Weprin, who had been invited for the announcement. Weprin says he is happy for P.S. 46, but says the system relies too heavily on test scores.
The Department of Education responded. Jim Leeber of the department says P.S. 46 proves that beyond test scores, students need a well-rounded education.
But outside P.S. 151 in Woodside, which got an "f" on its progress report, some parents questioned the rewards for better schools.
