NEW YORK (WABC) -- Mayoral control of New York City schools is set to expire.
Both Mayor Mike Bloomberg and Governor David Paterson addressed questions, as protestors weighed-in.
"My group is saying we need to keep mayoral control the way it is," supporter Ann Purnell said. "They made a few changes in the assembly bill and that was fine, but what we need is to keep it in place."
"No other city agency is run as a dictatorship, but somehow the mayor and the chancellor get to make all the decisions when it comes to our kids," mayoral control opponent Leonie Haimson said.
Officials say the end of mayoral control would be a setback."All the progress that mayoral control has yielded, and results are staggering, would be lost by the expiration of this law," Governor David Paterson said.
"We've ended a culture of mediocrity and failure and replaced it with a culture of accountability and success," Mayor Mike Bloomberg said.
"The bottom line is we cannot have this chaotic situation for kids," she said.
If mayoral control is not extended by the Tuesday deadline, the mayor says the only group to benefit will be the lawyers, who will be in court arguing over what happens next to the New York City public school system.
