Teaching taekwondo in City schools

BRONXWOOD (WABC) -- No one wants to miss the taekwondo class at the new high school for language and innovation.

Taekwondo (or Tae Kwon Do) is taught at thirteen schools in the city by Korea TKD, founded by Regina Im, who immigrated to New York from Korea. "I figured Taekwondo is going to be great exercise that I could share with the New York City public school students, that they can learn teamwork and discipline," she said.

The school has other offerings of physical education classes and taekwondo is included with the other choices as a credit-bearing course.

The school opened in September with 73 freshmen. Eighty percent of them are new to this country. Uniforms are donated by the Korean Cultural Center. Schools pay a fee for the weekly class, but Regina Im is concerned that cuts in school budgets may lead some to cut taekwondo.
