Stricter bully law takes effect in New York schools

Monday, July 02, 2012

Bullies in New York state are facing a tough new law after the Dignity for all Students Act took effect Sunday.

The law requires all schools to appoint an official to deal with bullying.

The schools must also have plans to deal with harassment, bullying and discrimination. And they must coordinate with law enforcement when necessary.

Officials say social media bullying complaints are on the rise, and the state Legislature added an amendment to include cyberbullying last week that takes effect next year.
