'Grey's Anatomy' Actor Caught on Island During Fire

CATALINA ISLAND, May 11, 2007 (KABC-TV) -- This is an unusual story -- it's a case of bad timing for one of the stars of "Grey's Anatomy."

Steven W. Bailey plays Joe the bartender. He and his wife live near Griffith Park, so they just dealt with that fire. To relax, they decided to take a trip.

Steven W. Bailey: "And we thought, get away for a little while, get away from all this fire nonsense, go to Catalina and get some fresh air."

But as the Bailey's headed toward Catalina, they were headed for more of what they had just left at home. They didn't know it yet -- they couldn't even imagine it.

Steven W. Bailey: "We were approaching the island, and we see the smoke. And we actually, from pretty far away, I jokingly said to my wife, I was like, 'That cloud formation over there almost looks like there's a fire in Catalina.'"

Bailey is featured on one of the biggest shows on television. But on this night, the drama is real.

Steven W. Bailey: "It's just descended into more and more fire, more and more smoke, more and more ash."

When the ABC7 crew left them, Steven and his wife were not being allowed to drive up and check into their hotel. They were considering getting back on the ferry and going home.
