Nick Jonas speaks out about diabetes

Wednesday, August 06, 2008

If you're under the age of 18, you probably have a picture of them on your wall.

If you are a parent of a teenager, you probably bought that picture. The Jonas Brothers are one of the biggest bands in the world, and the youngest member just stepped into a different kind of spotlight.

On stage, Nick, Kevin and Joe jonas are larger than life. Selling out the bigest arenas in the world. Millions of fans and the dollars to match and it doesn't get much bigger.

But everyday Nick, the youngest in the group is reminded that he is very normal. In fact just like 150,000 other kids under 18 in the U.S., he has type I diabetes.

When he finally went to the hospital Nick's blood sugar was over 700, nearly ten times what it should be.

He spent three days in the hospital and got a crash course in how to live with diabetes.

While he jokes about it now and uses it as an excuse to get out of trouble with his equally famous brothers, Nick says it was very scary at first and because of how he felt, he wanted to help other kids with diabetes.

So with his parents by his side, he held this news conference and joined forces with Bayer diabetes care.

He even wrote a song about his ordeal and the idea behind the song and the press is letting other kids know they are not alone.

His best advice is to reach out for help and family is so very important.
