How to prevent summer headaches

Thursday, July 18, 2013

Do you seem to be getting more headaches this summer than usual?

There may be a reason, or several reasons, and it's more than just the heat.

"Summer can be one big trigger for a headache," said Grace Gold, a headache patient.

It's true, headaches are often worse in the summer.

"The heat and humidity, being out in it," Gold said.

Dehydration makes it worse.

So can the sunlight, especially for people like Grace Gold who already suffers from migraines.

"There's a connection between the visual system and pain pathways in the brain," said Dr. Brian Grosberg, Co-director Montefiore Headache Center.

As co-director of the Montefiore Headache Center, Dr. Brian Grosberg says patients often complain about the fragrance in bug spray and sunscreen.

"The heat really makes the fragrance stronger and that sets off a headache for me," Gold said.

Also a problem is some of our favorite summer foods.

But don't blame the hot dog; it's the nitrates that are often used as a preservative. It's thought they dilate blood vessels in the brain.

Add some alcohol and the problem gets worse, especially wines high in tannins and sulfites.

Maybe what we all need is a vacation, but Dr. Grosberg says factor in the pre-travel stress and the flight.

"The actual flying motion too, the altitude can be a trigger for headaches," Dr. Grosberg said.

The message is not to give up the sun, the fun, and the hot dogs, but if you're like Grace, just plan ahead.

She brings hats, snacks and fragrance-free products.

"It's always good to be prepared, it's worth a headache free day," Gold said.

What we need one day soon is a rainstorm to cool things off, but for some people, that change in barometric pressure right before a summer storm can also trigger a headache.
