NEW YORK (WABC) -- There is a new way to pinpoint the best opportunity to get pregnant without expensive fertility treatments --- the DuoFertility device.
The device is available in England, and the FDA recently approved it in the United States.
The monitor costs about $800, far less than the thousands of dollars many couples spend on fertility treatments.
Of course, it isn't for all women.
But it's helping more and more couples with unexplained fertility issues conceive.
This fetal sonogram says it all. Sirin Aysan Weiss is four months pregnant, she's having a girl.
"I was very excited and at first I couldn't believe it actually," Weiss said.
That's because Sirin and her husband tried for almost a year to have a baby, with no luck.
"We did all the tests and it turns out none of us have any problems," Weiss said.
But 39-year-old Sirin was concerned because she was getting older. So she went to Dr. Jacques Mortiz at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital who suggested she use a new fertility monitor called "DuoFertility."
He says many women trying to get pregnant chart their ovulation cycle, which is enormously time-consuming.
But this device does all the work for you.
"This device is great because it takes the guesswork out of becoming pregnant," Dr. Mortiz said.
The patch sensor is worn under the arm where it monitors body temperature up to 20,000 times a day.
When women are most fertile, their temperature slightly increases, which the sensor can detect.
After a few days, the patient can then upload this information to a computer and send it to the University of Cambridge, where the device was developed. There, fertility experts chart the data to determine when a woman is ovulating, increasing her odds of conception.
"I started in February, and I was pregnant in May," Weiss said.
But the DuoFertility device isn't for all women.
For example, if someone's fallopian tubes are blocked, this device will not work.
"This is for people who want to get pregnant, want to do it a little quicker, and for people who have gone to the doctor and everything really is normal, I think it's worth trying this," Dr. Mortiz said.
Studies show the device success rate is equal to that of fertility treatments for couples with no history of medical problems.
