CARLSBAD (WABC) -- Some California residents literally came to a fork in the road.
A 6-foot tall utensil popped up earlier this week at an intersection in Carlsbad.
But Wednesday, it was taken down.
Locals say eye-catching statue mysteriously appeared. It was made out of wood, coated with shiny silver spray paint and mounted on a steel base, planted on the median where Levante Street meets Anillo Way.
And while exactly where the clever conversation-starter was taken remains a mystery. The artist has come forward, but wishes to remain anonymous, saying he put it up as a lark and also as a kind of whimsical landmark for visitors.
Some residents liken it to renegade urban art like the controversial but acclaimed "Surfing Madonna" mosaic that appeared on city property in Encincitas, which was later ordered removed by that city.
The city of Carlsbad said that while they appreciate the creativity, it is neither safe nor legal to put objects like the fork on public streets or medians.
