Boyfriends Questioned And Released In Dancer Murder

Wednesday, November 30, 2005

The family of the man who found his ex-girlfriend dead with her throat slashed is speaking publicly for the first time. Catherine Woods' body was found inside her Upper East Side apartment on Sunday.

Eyewitness News reporter Lisa Colagrossi is live on the Upper East Side with the latest.

Police are still no closer to making an arrest in the slashing death of Catherine Woods. So far they have questioned and released two boyfriends, including one she was living with, David Haughn.

Brittany Haughn, Sister: "He loved her a lot and I know he's very devastated and very heartbroken."

Catherine Woods and David Haughn shared the apartment where she was murdered. Haughn's sisters say he loved Woods and they were engaged, until recently.

Brittany Haughn, Sister: "He didn't tell me about the breakup. As I knew it they were happy. They were always happy."

It appears Woods also had an on-again off-again relationship with Paul Vincent Cortez, a struggling entertainer. Cortez met Woods while working as a trainer at the Equinox gym on the Upper East Side.

A published report says Cortez once got rough with Woods, allegedly throwing her against a wall during a fight. Both Cortez and Haughn were released by police after hours of questioning. Haugh's mother calls it an ordeal.

Janet Haughn, Stepmother: "He was hungry, he was very tired and he wanted to go to sleep and he wanted to be left alone so he could grieve over his girlfriend."

Detectives say neither Haughn nor Cortez had any scratches or marks on them. That's significant because Woods fought for her life, scratching her killer. Police found skin under her fingernails.

Investigators also say that someone using a cell-phone called Woods seven times in rapid succession just minutes before she was killed.

Woods' father and younger brother identified her body at the city morgue yesterday then flew back to Ohio.

Jon Woods, Father: "She was a very beautiful person, wonderful and she didn't harm anybody."

The Woods family is planning a memorial service for Friday.
