An Unbelievable, Horrific Scene in Midtown

Tuesday, January 03, 2006

The driver of a horse drawn carriage is clinging to life this morning after his horse went wild and smashed head-on into a car in Midtown.

The horrific crash happened on a crowded street.

Eyewitness News reporter Lisa Colagrossi is live on the West side with the latest.

No one knows exactly what set the horse off. Witnesses say the horse suddenly bolted, taking off on a gallop for several blocks before slamming into a station wagon at 50th Street and Ninth Avenue.

Jasna Tomasevic, Witness: "I was just amazed seeing a horse running, because the horse was really galloping."

Jasna Tomasevic, who's visiting from Florida, witnessed the whole thing from a restaurant on the corner.

She was having dinner there and saw the horrifying collision from a window.

Jasna Tomasevic, Witness: "The horse hit the car and then the guy, I didn't know that was a guy, he flew over the car, and it was horrible."

It was the driver who was thrown across the intersection. By the time he was taken away in an ambulance, witnesses say the street was soaked in blood.

There were no passengers in the carriage, but two men in the station wagon were also injured. They are now hospitalized in stable condition.

The 36-year-old driver remains in St. Vincent's Hospital in critical condition.

As for the horse, the horse suffered a broken shoulder and leg. Police say he has been euthanized.
