Police search for killer in teen elevator stabbing

Monday, February 20, 2006

In Brooklyn police are hunting for suspects in the deadly stabbing of a teenager, who's body was found inside an apartment building elevator.

Eyewitness News reporter Joe Torres is live in Crown Heights.

From one Brooklyn housing project to another, a teenager we're told, was simply enjoying his day off visiting a friend when suddenly he was fatally stabbed at 1191 Park Place in Crown Heights. Right now there is still no explanation as to who did or why.

On the second floor of an apartment high-rise at the Marcy Houses in Bed-Stuy the Bethune family is mourning a tragic loss: 18-year-old Michael Bethune died early Monday morning after someone at the Albany Housing Project in Crown Heights stabbed him once in the chest.

Darryl Bethune, Victim's Uncle: "I told him, be yourself, go to school, come back home."

The stabbing occurred just before midnight on the 10th floor. Bethune was rushed to Interfaith Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. Police have made no arrests and the motive for the stabbing is unclear.

Back in Bed-Stuy family and friends told us Bethune was getting his life in order. He had a steady job and was on his way to community college.

Ivan Brown, Victim's Friend: "He was a good guy. He had a good head on his shoulders. He was going somewhere and they took his life away."

The family is absolutely distraught over what happened and they preferred not to release a picture of their loved one but said prayers and support during this difficult time would be greatly appreciated.
