(New York-WABC, February 21, 2006) (WABC) -- A tribute today showed the true impact that Peter Jennings, the late anchor of ABC News, had on the community. The block of West 66th Street from Central Park West to Columbus Avenue was renamed "Peter Jennings Way."
Peter Jennings was 67-years-old when he died of lung cancer last August. His family, ABC News President David Westin and Mayor Bloomberg joined his colleagues, friends and neighbors today to pay tribute.
The late anchorman led ABC News for over two decades.
New York is the city Jennings adopted and where he led "World News Tonight" as its sole anchor from 1983 until his death in 2005.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg proposed the bill to rename the street. And today, with the help of his family, Mayor Bloomberg, friends and colleagues street was named after him.
Jennings began working at ABC News in 1964. He would go on to report from all 50 states and around the globe, including every war zone.
For his coverage of "9/11" he was described as "the center of gravity" for viewers around the country by the Washington Post.
Jennings, a Canadian, also held American citizenship since may 2003. He reportedly took great pride in his perfect score on the citizenship exam.
On April 5th 2005 on "World News Tonight" Jennings informed viewers of his battle with lung cancer. Peter Jennings passed away in August.
