Why buy? It's all about the swap!

Tuesday, February 21, 2006

Get the hottest fashions without having to buy anything. It's all about the trade.

Eyewitness News reporter Lauren Glassberg is here to explain.

It's like trading baseball cards, you give up a great player for another one. Or in this case a great pair of jeans for a great sweater. There are two ways to swap, at the store or at a swap-meet style party.

At the Buffalo Exchange, a store new to New York, but one that started 32 years ago in Arizona, what you'll find are clothes and shoes, most worn before, but most, still in style.

But the other exciting element is that not only can you buy, you can sell and even swap, and that's where you get the most value.

While some people sell, I chose to swap a pair of jeans that no longer fit. So I ended up with a kitch Barry Manilow shirt and some cash back.

Here's another idea: get a group of friends together and swap clothes. That's the idea behind the Swapettes. They've been meeting for a year, friends who admire each other's clothes.

Sarah Morgan also uses the get-togethers as a way to show off her new handbag and belt designs. And even better, the items no one wants get dropped off at a Park Slope shelter. Talk about a shopping activity that does everyone good.

The Swapettes is a private party, but certainly a good idea to do with your friends. As for Buffalo Exchange, the store is located in Williamsburg. Make sure your clothes are clean and in good condition if you're thinking of swapping them.
