Metal pipe slams through car roof in midtown

Tuesday, May 02, 2006

It was a scary, close call for three people driving on 8th Avenue Tuesday afternoon.

Eyewitness News is told the two adults and a toddler were near the New York Times building, which is under construction, when a metal pipe crashed through the roof of their car.

It happened around 3:30 p.m. Authorities say a metal rod nearly three feet long went right through their sun roof, hurting the male driver's shoulder and hitting a female passenger in the head. The two-year-old in the car was not hurt.

All of the car's occupants were taken to St. Vincent's Midtown Hospital for evaluation, but it's said the injuries are not severe.

Eighth Avenue was closed in the area during the investigation into what made the pipe fall.
