HEAT program for seniors

Monday, May 22, 2006

There are plenty of money worries for seniors who live slightly above the poverty level and barely get by and the rising cost of fuel is certainly high on the list.

Now a new rebate program is lending a helping hand.

Seniors we spoke with at the Northeast Queens Jewish Community Council are signing up for "HEAT." It's designed to help those strapped for cash because of their fuel bills, which are expected to rise again this winter.

"HEAT" is administered by the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty.

To qualify for the $100 dollar rebate seniors must be 60 years or older with a maximum income of $30,000 for one person. The rebate can also be put toward other expenses.

The Met Council is working hard to get seniors to sign up before the May 31st deadline. It's estimated about 40,000 seniors qualify. Many of whom still don't know about it.

Seniors who would like more info on the program should call the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty. They run the HEAT rebate program and you can contact them at: 212-453-9500.
