Husband and wife stabbed by push-in robber

(Upper West Side-WABC, June 4, 2006) (WABC) -- Police are investigating a violent robbery on the Upper West Side. A 67-year-old man was stabbed by someone who apparently broke into his sixth floor apartment.

Eyewitness News reporter Jeff Rossen is on the scene near 97th Street and Columbus Avenue.

Police were still inside the apartment Sunday evening trying to piece together the crime. It looks like a classic push-in robbery.

Police say a man knocked on the apartment door. The husband went to answer it. He opened up the door just a crack and suddenly a man pushed his way into the apartment demanding money. The man stabbed the husband in the head. The wife was trying to give the suspect money, but he wasn't satisfied and stabbed her in the ribs and arms. Both of the victims were taken to the hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.

Residents and police are wondering who did it and why. Another mystery is how the man got into the building in the first place. Doormen guard the front door.

"The security guards are right here in front," said one building resident. "They buzz you in and buzz you out."

Police describe the suspect only as a black male, 5 feet 7 inches tall, with a stocky build, and wearing black clothing.
