Dramatic police chase over the Williamsburg Bridge

(Williamsburg Bridge-WABC, July 27, 2006) (WABC) -- The driver of a minivan took police on a chase over the Williamsburg Bridge into Brooklyn, all with his family in tow, before crashing, injuring eight people.

Eyewitness News has learned authorities began pursuing the vehicle after the driver struck several parked cars at the intersection of Essex and Delancey streets on the Lower East Side just after 1:30 a.m.

Police say the driver of the blue minivan refused to pull over as he crossed the Williamsburg Bridge, with police in pursuit.

The chase ended when the minivan crashed into several cars at the intersection of South 5th and Havemeyer streets.

The driver was taken into custody and being treated for injuries. According to police, charges against him are pending.

Two police officers were being treated for minor injuries at Bellevue Hospital. One officer suffered a hand injury, the other sustained a leg injury.

The driver's family, including a wife and children, were in the minivan during the chase.

Four of them were taken to Woodhull Hospital, and two others were taken to Bellevue Hospital.
