Heat wave death toll doubles in NYC

Saturday, August 05, 2006

An additional 10 deaths were certified by the city medical examiner's office on Saturday as being caused by the three-day heat wave earlier in the week, bringing New York City's total heat-related deaths to 20. That's 10 more than what was reported just Friday.

The most recent autopsy findings dealt with two Brooklyn residents and eight Queens residents. The six woman and four men ranged in age from 52 to 99, said a spokeswoman for the medical examiner's office.

Autopsy results are still pending for at least three other people who's deaths have been reported. Those include a man who's body was found Wednesday under a bridge in Brooklyn, and an 82-year-old woman and her 47-year-old son who also was found dead in the borough.

On Saturday, temperatures were in the 80s, continuing the cool off after the heat wave broke Thursday night. The blistering temperatures earlier in the week at times hit triple digits, causing power outages throughout the city.
