Saturday, August 19, 2006

The man accused of a gruesome murder on Long Island goes to court to face arraignment Saturday. Police believe the man from Glen Cove killed and dismembered his neighbor, stuffing her body in garbage cans and putting her severed head in the trunk of his car.

Eyewitness News reporter Lisa Colagrossi has more from Mineola.

Thirty year-old Evan Marshall has no prior criminal record for any violent offenses, just crimes like petit larceny and drunk driving.

But Saturday he will go to court and face charges that he killed and dismembered his neighbor, a woman he barely knew.

"People are nice here, and we always felt safe and secure. Until today.. or 'til last night," one woman from the neighborhood said.

Thursday night is when police say a 57-year-old retired school teacher was stabbed to death in her home on Willada Lane in Glen Cove, her body then dismembered.

Another neighbor, Vera McBride, said, "We're astounded by the whole thing. Very frightening."

The investigation began when Denice Fox's daughter called police, saying her mother was missing, and that she had found blood in her mother's home.

Det. Lt. Dennis Farrell, Nassau County Police Dept: "At that time, the woman was rather distraught. She was describing a scene in her home that included a great deal of blood on the vestibule floor... the fact that the back window of the home had been broken out."

As police searched the neighborhood for clues they were led inside 30-year-old Evan Marshall's house. Inside, they say they found Denice Fox's body stuffed in several trash bins in Marshall's basement.

Friday morning, when Marshall came home, police made another gruesome discovery inside the trunk of his Toyota: The victim's head.

Neighbor Maureen Chubert said Friday, "People have to be very, very sick to do something like this."

Police believe Marshall was involved in another crime Thursday in Glen Cove. They a woman injured in a hit and run described the same car where they found the severed head.

Investigators are now looking for a motive in both incidents.

They say that as they were going house to house on Friday, they reached Evan Marshall's home and his mother answered the door and said "Call my lawyer." They did, and then gained access to the house and found parts of the victim's body.
