(New York - WABC, October 2, 2006) (WABC) -- Security is stepped up at synagogues around our area as Jews observe the most holy day in the Jewish calendar, Yom Kippur, or Day of Atonement.
It began at sundown Sunday and ends sundown Monday.
Eyewitness News reporter Ken Rosato shows us how it's being observed.
It's one of the sacred days in the Jewish calendar, Yom Kippur.
Sadly, it's also become a time when Jews the world over have had to worry about personal security as they gather in temples and synagogues.
Many temples in the tri-state area have hired additional security and requested a police presence for the day.
"I feel totally secure," congregant Ken Edlow said. "I don't have a bit of doubt."
"I'm sure there's enough security, although they're taking down the barriers," congregant Jim Rosenfield said. "Which I think opens it up, and I think it's just fine."
The concrete barricades that now flank one side of Manhattan's famous Temple Emmanuel used to wrap around the whole structure. The temple's entrance is free of most obstructions Monday, but the security level remains high.
It's much the same at other nearby synagogues. While police patrol outside, many congregants say they feel free to focus with family and friends on what really matter inside.
