(Queens, NY - WABC, October 8, 2006) (WABC) -- In Queens, an accident involving a horse and a taxi happened Sunday.
It happened in the afternoon near Conduit Avenue and 84th Street. The horse did not survive and its 13-year-old rider is in serious condition.
"Eyewitness News" reporter Kemberly Richardson had the latest.
The owner of the horse said it looked like something straight out a movie. One second, he was riding a horse here along South Conduit Avenue. The next, he was watching his horse, a 7-year-old quarter horse, named Romeo, leaping through the air with a 13-year-old on its back.
The horse owner, Julius Stanton, said something must have spooked the animal which darted out into traffic, in front of a yellow cab.
Stanton had taken two kids out for a ride, a 12-year-old and a 13-year-old who helped him clean the stables where he boarded Romeo, the home of The Federation of Black Cowboys.
When the horse took off, the 13-year-old boy held on. But he was thrown and now he is in the hospital with severe leg and head injuries.
Julius Stanton, horse owner: "The horse flipped over and the kid fell off, threw the kid off and the horse fell on the street over there. I went over and took the saddle off of him. The horse got up, walked over here. That is where he died at. "
Marquise Jemmott, horseback rider: "The horse flipped and the kid flew into the street. The horse was sitting in the street bleeding and his guts were hanging out.
Jemmott is a 12-year-old who was riding a second horse. He is really concerned about his friend Jerrod who is at Jamaica hospital in serious condition.
As for Romeo, he was killed but he was still out at the scene Sunday. Sanitation was on its way to pick up the horse.
Julius says he can always replace a horse, it is the kids that he is worried about.
