Police: Car jumps curb, hits pedestrians

Monday, November 13, 2006

It was a truly frightening scene in Union Square Monday night as four people were seriously injured -- injured after authorities say a car jumped the sidewalk and careened down the block before crashing.

It happened at East 12th Street and Broadway.

Authorities say the car jumped the curb then went down the sidewalk, cut through the crowd of people here for more than a full block, crashing into a pole and leaving behind four seriously hurt.

Lin Brishaj, eyewitness: "There was a man on top of the car which got slammed against the diner."

The first of four people was mowed down here along Broadway as witnesses watched in horror. The black Honda Civic barreled down the sidewalk and not stopping witnesses say.

Outside the Bon Vivant Diner, shards of glass are everywhere. The mirror was also ripped from the side of the car.

Arthuro Mena, eyewitness: "He smashed the window and then continued driving ..."

And next door at Lifestyle Salon, Haim Hazan was working near the front window.

"It was so fast ... then we came out, we saw the car... " he said.

On the Salon's security camera, you can just barely see the car as it races past the front window. Everyone in the salon then runs to the door to see what happened. The car travels another thirty yards to East 11th Street before it crashes into a light pole.

A woman was at the wheel and two others, appearing shaken up, were sitting in the back seat. Police are investigating the cause. As the driver later rushed to another vehicle, she would not answer questions.

Two of the people involved in this accident are at Bellevue Hospital and are in stable condition. Two are also at St. Vincent's, one of them is in serious condition.
