Innocent bystander fatally shot in Brooklyn

Thursday, November 16, 2006

One man is facing charges, another is still being questioned by police, following a deadly subway shooting.

The gunfire rang out at the busy Canarsie-Rockaway Parkway Station, which is the end of the L line in Brooklyn.

When the gunfire started, the streets of Canarsie were packed with people and those people ran for their lives. All of them survived except one, Toolsie Sukhu, 56, an immigrant from India. He was hit in the chest by what witnesses say was a gang member's bullet meant for someone else.

"The first gunfire, they shot the guy and everybody ran. Nobody called no cops, they were just running for their life," eyewitness Shauna Woods said.

"I hear two gunshots and that's when I went running and then a guy got shot by the phone booth. He was just laying there on the floor," another young eyewitness said.

Police say the dispute started over a Metrocard scam and turned violent in seconds. Apparently, the men were offering to swipe people through the turnstiles for only a dollar. That somehow set off an argument with four other men. Suddenly a fistfight turned into a gun battle. That's when the victim, Sukhu was shot and then trampled by the crowd.

One man was killed and another was injured. Shauna said the gunmen looked like gang members to her.

"They all had Blood flags on them and they was doing the Blood handshakes and stuff so you could tell they were gang bangers," she said.

Sakhu was a father of four had been on his way home from work.

Police recovered the gun, a 9mm, then chased down two suspects.

So far police have arrested Dwayne Holmes, 23, of Brooklyn, on murder, assault and weapons charges. Charges are still pending against his 19-year-old accomplice, Kendell Bennett.

A second victim, a 20-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the arm, was in stable condition at Brookdale Hospital, police said.
