Feud between restaurants owners boils over

(Hunts Point-WABC, January 2, 2006) (WABC) -- A food fight in the Bronx explodes into flames. Now the owner of a fried chicken restaurant is under arrest and accused of trying to take out his rival.

Eyewitness News reporter Ken Rosato is live in Hunts Point with more.

Police say yesterday morning at 4:00 a.m., the owner of Kennedy Fried Chicken on Hunts Point Avenue in the Bronx apparently got into a bit of a price war with the adjacent donut shop, Twin Donut.

Eyewitness News is told the donut shop owner started selling chicken cheaper than the chicken restaurant.

So early yesterday, investigators say the chicken restaurant owner hammered a hole in the wall between the two stores, sprayed in some gasoline and tossed in a match, causing a two-alarm fire.

Police say he then showed up 30 minutes later as if nothing had happened. Fire marshalls, though, had already found some gasoline in the hole.

Investigators say at that point the chicken restaurant owner admitted setting the fire and said his business was suffering.

The good news is, the adjacent apartment building where lots of people live did not catch fire.

The chicken restaurant owner is now under arrest and charged with arson. The owner of the donut shop says he does have another shop and at least he'll have another source of income.
