Cops search for missing baby in the Bronx

(The Bronx - WABC, January 8, 2007) (WABC) -- The search is on for a missing one-week-old baby in the Bronx.

But authorities say the circumstances surrounding the baby's disappearance are not adding up, and police are questioning the mother.

Eyewitness News reporter Lucy Yang is in the Castle Hill section with more.

We are on the Cross Bronx Expressway service road by Ellis Avenue. Just before 6 p.m., detectives escorted the family of Apt 3B here to the precinct to question them. We believe they are the relatives of the mother and she may have lived here as well.

In any case, the critical questions right now: Where is her baby? And is he still alive?

We are told the 29-year-old mother, who also has a three-year-old, was due at Jacobi Hospital for a one month checkup for her newborn boy. Except she ended up calling police, claiming a black man put a gun to her back and then fled with her baby.

But from the beginning police were suspicious because she apparently took so long, almost 30 minutes we understand, to call for help after the alleged incident.

A source now tells me the mother eventually buckled under pressure and told police where she dumped the baby. There was an intense search around the hospital. Police have not yet found the baby.

What started as a possible child abduction this afternoon quickly turned into a frustrating search for a baby.
