Police involved shooting in Queens

Sunday, January 28, 2007

Investigators spent Sunday morning on the scene of a police involved shooting in Queens.

Eyewitness News reporter Kemberly Richardson has the latest from Jackson Heights with details.

Police aren't saying much. I'm at corner of 91st Street and 37th Avenue. I was able to walk down 37th Avenue. Down the block, there are at least two dozen plain clothes detectives and about another dozen officers in uniform.

At about 5:25 a.m. Sunday morning, apparently an off-duty lieutenant was out here in the neighborhood and witnessed some kind of altercation.

Police aren't saying whether that was a fight or robbery. They say the officer intervened while the suspect had something in his hand. It's not clear whether it was a knife or something else. Police say he tried to attack the officer, but the cop opened fire and shot that suspect in the chest.

That suspect has been transported from the scene and was taken to Elmhurst Hospital in serious condition.
