No charges filed in child's tragic death

(Brooklyn - WABC, February 8, 2007) (WABC) -- A three-year-old boy is dead after he was hit by a car in the Sunset Park section of Brooklyn.

The little boy and his family were crossing the intersection at 55th Street and 5th Avenue. Late Thursday, police finished questioning the driver.

Eyewitness News reporter Jim Dolan is at the 72nd Precinct with the latest.

Police questioned and released the driver. He will not be charged in connection with this incident, but a three-year-old boy is dead after being hit by a truck and dragged as his mother, father and big sister all looked on in horror.

Police now believe the driver of the truck did not realize he had hit the child. The driver and the truck were found about a mile away.

The owner of the red pickup truck had a lot of explaining to do to police. Earlier, police believed it was his truck that struck and killed the three-year-old boy.

Orlando heard the story from the boy's father who saw it all.

"They were crossing the street and they were holding their hand and all of a sudden the kid got loose, ran off into the street, hit him ... dragged him from here all the way across 5th Avenue and left him dead," Orlando said.

"I ran outside, saw the kid lying in the street in a pool of blood ... mother hysterically screaming," an eyewitness told us.
