Brooklyn diner closed by health department

(Brooklyn- WABC, Feb. 28, 2007) (WABC) -- A Brooklyn diner, twice voted the best 24-hour diner in Brooklyn, was closed by the health department today for unsanitary conditions.

The Vegas Diner, at 1619 86th Street at the heart of the borough's Bensonhurst section, was shut by the health department following an inspection.

Inspectors found food prepared at unsafe temperature, evidence of smoking in the restaurant, bare hand contact with the food and no food protection certificate.

However, there were no vermin or rodents found.

The Vegas Diner was named Brooklyn's Best 24-Hour Diner in Brooklyn by the Daily News in 2002 and 2005.

Mayor Bloomberg visited the diner in 2003 to release a report to the community on his record of keeping campaign promises.

And in 2006, he was quoted as saying he liked the food there:

''My ex-wife used to always have two different answers to the question 'What's your favorite restaurant?' '' Bloomberg said, studying the Vegas's oversize menu. ''What's your favorite restaurant if you're going to eat one meal before you die, or if you're going to eat all of the meals the rest of your life? I would pick a big Greek diner for all of the meals the rest of my life. All the food comes in 10 minutes, it's all the same price and it's actually not bad.''
