Teen stabbed in Union Square

Monday, March 05, 2007

A teenager being chased by a group of other teens was stabbed multiple times on a sidewalk just east of Union Square Monday morning, according to police.

Authorities say the 16-year-old victim got off the subway and got into a verbal dispute on the platform of the nearby Union Square station just after 9 a.m.

He reportedly ran out of the subway station and tried to get to the high school, located more than a block away.

But police say the group overtook him on the sidewalk outside of 104 East 14th Street.

The attackers, as many as four, police say, stabbed the victim at least four times. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition.

The Department of Education says the victim, Mark Tyrell is an 11th grader at Chelsea Career and Technical Education High School in SoHO.

One member of the group, reportedly a 13-year-old eighth-grader at Abraham Lincoln Junio High School/Intermediate School in Brooklyn, was taken into custody. Three others are being sought.

Police say the weapon, either a screwdriver or an ice pick, was not recovered. The victim's bloodied black jacket and back pack were left at the scene.

Previous incidents of violence have been linked to Washington Irving High School. It was initially believed all those involved in this incident were students there. Last December, a 17-year-old was fatally stabbed in Union Square's farmers market during a melee of as many as 50 youths from two schools. A 16-year-old from Brooklyn was charged with the murder.

And in May 2003, a pregnant woman was hit by a stool thrown out the school's sixth-floor window. Mayor Bloomberg called it a "disgraceful act" and an example of students gone wild.

Police have also been monitoring Washington Irving High School for gang activity, with many students allegedly members of the Bloods street gang.
