(Jersey City - WABC, March 9, 2007) (WABC) -- A cat that has been trapped in a Bayonne, New Jersey sewer since Monday was rescued Friday.
This fleeting tail began when residents started hearing the sounds of a cat coming from inside a storm drain. It quickly captured the attention and sympathy of a group of animal lovers and neighborhood residents.
Workers from the city's Department of Public Works have spent two days trying to lure the cat to the surface. The feline was eventually pulled out by a resident with a net. The scared kitty ran away before it could be caged and looked over.
Residents had been leaving out cat food to entice the frightened animal out of the manhole and to make sure the cat didn't stave.
Some residents believe there are two cats in the drainpipe and wonder if this a place where stray cats roam, but the cat cries have produced a lot of sympathy.
The cat, described as a black cat with a cut on its leg, was discovered by a resident of 9th Street between Broadway and Avenue C.
A group of volunteers from the Hudson County Animal League arrived at the sewer Thursday afternoon, but the cat was nowhere to be found.
In an attempt to rescue the cat, the animal league members lowered a cage with a door designed to swing closed once the cat is inside.
Tuna fish in the cage served as bait.
Concerned citizens had also set up 24-hour surveillance over the trap so that, if and when the cat was caught, it could be pulled to safety.
