Beloved father gunned down

(Queens - WABC, April 5, 2007) (WABC) -- In Queens, a murder scene is surrounded by posters this morning that plead for the public's help in finding a killer. A father of six was gunned down near a check cashing store at 126th Street and Rockaway Boulevard in South Ozone Park.

Eyewitness News reporter Lisa Colagrossi is live on the scene with the latest.

52-year-old Courtney Atkinson lived across the corner. It was there he was gunned down in the middle of the day.

Memorial candles have bet set up to remember this hard working father of six. Courtney Atkinson was a Delta Airlines skycap. He the father of three children here and three more in the Caribbean.

His live-in girlfriend, Novette Facey was shattered by his death. "I don't know how I will live without him," she said.

Police think the gunman followed him from the check store expecting to get a fist full of of cash but he had gone there to send money, wiring it to his kids in the Caribbean.

"Who will take care of his kids now?," the victim's friend Thelma Facey said.

That's a good question.

Whoever killed Atkinson, police say was ruthless pulling the trigger in broad daylight. So far police say they have no suspects and few leads.

"If police don't catch him, they have to pay for it because God will make them pay for it. Believe me," Thelma Facey, victim's friend, said.

Police say it was unclear if the robber got away with any money because Atkinson still had his wallet on him. So far, no arrests have been made.

Police are asking for the public's help.
