(New Brunswick - WABC, April 11, 2007) (WABC) -- Don Imus who was suspended for comments made towards the Rutgers women's basketball team, is now starting to lose advertisers.
Eyewitness News reporter Ken Rosato is live on the campus in New Brunswick.
He apologized. He apologized again, and again. Don Imus thought that would be it. Nope, today there are at least three protests planned against the broadcaster.
Since calling the Rutgers Women's basketball team "nappy-headed ho's", people are attacking Don Imus' character with protests. Now advertisers are hitting him in the pocketbook.
At least three advertisers on Imus' radio and TV show have suspended their ads, including the country's biggest marketer, Proctor & Gamble.
The presidential candidates however seem to have varying opinions on his comments and apology.
Rudy Giuliani said, "I would appear on his program again. Sure. I would."
Hillary Clinton said, "I've never been asked to go on the show and I've never wanted to go on his show...and I certainly don't ever intend to go on his show."
Rutgers Women's basketball coach C. Vivian Stringer yesterday expressed her outrage, while commending her players for their dignity.
"Call women hoes? think about that. Would you have wanted your daughter to be called that?," Stringer said during a press conference yesterday.
Meanwhile, the players say that they will accept an invitation from Imus to meet with him in private.
"What hurts the most about this situation is that Mr. Imus knows not one of us personally. He doesn't know that Mattea is the funniest person you'll ever meet. Keya is the big sister you never had but always wanted. And "Piph" would make an unbelievable lawyer one day," said team player Heather Zurich.
The three protests planned for the region:
- At 11:00 a.m. -- There will be one on the steps of City Hall in Lower Manhattan.
- At Noon -- There will be one at the Newark campus of Rutgers University.
- At 1:30 -- There will be a protest rally at the New Brunswick campus of Rutgers University.
