(New York - WABC, April 22, 2007) (WABC) -- A drunk driver is suspected of causing a family tragedy in Queens.
Eyewitness News reporter Patricia Wu joins us live from Elmhurst with the story.
It is just another reminder not to drink and drive. Three young children are now without their mother. She died here at Elmhurst Hospital this morning.
Police says the suspected drunk driver in maroon Camry slammed into a white mini van carrying a mother and her three young children including a baby.
The accident happened just before 2 o'clock Sunday morning at 65th Place and Queens Boulevard in Woodside.
One witness told us what he saw.
"I heard a big boom. It was incredible. By the time I got there, there were cops and firemen all over the place. I said my god, this is incredible. Baby got hurt and it's so sad. God bless him," said the eyewitness, Burt Lopez. "I hope he comes out alright."
Now, given the extensive damage you saw, it is fortunate that the three kids were not seriously hurt. But as you can imagine, it is a very difficult traumatic time for them.
Police did arrest the suspected drunken driver at the scene.
