19 hurt in NYC bus wreck; 1 critical

Sunday, April 29, 2007

A Queens man involved in a crash with a city bus is charged with driving drunk.

The collision this morning in Kissena Park, Queens injured 19 people. Three remained hospitalized Saturday night, including the motorist accused of causing the wreck. Eyewitness News reporter Patricia Wu has more.

"I heard them say, 'Oh my God, oh my God. They were loud like they were at a concert or something like that, just nervewracking screams of terror," said area resident Anthony Derobertis.

Those screams were coming from the accident victims in Kissena Park. Anthony Derobertis lives right across the street and was one of the first people on the scene.

Witnesses say a car ran a red light and slammed into a bus at the intersection of Booth Memorial Avenue and 164th Street. It happened just before 6 a.m. Saturday morning.

"When I went over to the car, the two kids in the front seat were unconscious. The kid in the back was in and out," said Derobertis. "I asked him if he was okay and he said he was all right."

Police say the car's driver, 25-year-old David Cho, has been charged with driving while intoxicated. The three young men in the car were rushed to New York Hospital in Queens and are expected to recover.

There were 15 people on the New York City transit bus. Paramedics treated many of them at the scene.

"There were a lot of banged up people, bruised elbows and knees and some were complaining about their backs and some complaining about knocks on their head," said Derobertis.

The driver of the bus is in stable condition and two other passengers said they did not need medical attention.
