Baby found dead in closet

(New York - WABC, May 6, 2007) (WABC) -- A one week old baby reportedly found dead in a bag, in a closet, in a home in Queens.

With late breaking details, Eyewitness News reporter Lucy Yang has more from Elmhurst Hospital.

The one-week-old baby boy was rushed here to Elmhurst Hospital early Sunday morning, not that doctors could do anything for him. The tiny baby's body, we're told, was already starting to decompose.

It appears to be another case of unwanted teenage pregnancy ending in the most tragic of ways with a baby dead and a teenager in trouble.

Eyewitness News has learned that a 15-year-old girl gave birth to a baby while in the shower last week but instead of embracing and bonding with her new born, we're told, the teenager put the baby in a bag and hid it in her closet.

If she naively thought that would take care of her problem, harsh reality set in. The teenager's mother noticing a foul order coming from the closet made the gruesome discovery and, at 5:45 a.m. Sunday morning, brought the baby to the hospital. But, of course, it was too late.

The teenager who did not come to the hospital has been questioned by detectives.

Now, the young teenage mother has not yet been charged. Authorities are waiting for an autopsy to determine if her baby was still born or if she killed him. The medical examiner has scheduled an exam for Monday.
