12-year-old girl struck by car

Thursday, May 10, 2007

A 12-year-old girl on her way to school was struck and critically injured in a horrific crash in the Springfield Gardens section of Queens this morning.

Officials say the girl was struck near the intersection of Guy Brewer Boulevard and South Conduit Avenue at around 7:40 a.m. She sustained serious, but non-life threatening injuries, at Mary Immaculate Hospital.

However, her leg may need to be amputated.

Eyewitness News is told the driver, 73-year-old Nora Palmer, lost control of her BMW for unknown reasons. The vehicle jumped the curb and careened onto the sidewalk, where it struck the girl, who was standing at the curb.

Police say Palmer accidently hit the gas instead of the break when jumping the curb.

Palmer was taken to Jamaica Hospital with a leg injury.

"I was watering the plants this morning and she passed and I just hear boom," said Baby Kissoon.

The girl, who attends P.S. 159, was walking to her uncle's house as part of her morning routine to school when she was struck.

No charges were filed.
