Fire rips through grocery store

Friday, July 27, 2007

Two workers were critically injured when fire tore through a grocery store in the Claremont section of the Bronx this morning.

Eyewitness News is told the workers, both men, were inside the 1225 Fulton Meat Grocery at 1225 Fulton Avenue when fire broke out just before 4:30 a.m.

Neighbors said they saw the smoke and banged on the gate of the store, which was not open.

Officials say the victims were rescued and rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital in critical condition in cardiac arrest. One victim was described as an approximately 25-year-old man in respiratory arrest.

The men may have been sleeping inside the grocery store at the time of the fire.

Two firefighters were also treated for minor injuries. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
