Cruise ship bumps into dock on the West Side

Thursday, August 02, 2007

A cruise ship bumped into a dock on the West Side this morning, causing minor damage to the front of the vessel.

Eyewitness News is told the front of the Carnival Victory hit the dock at the intersection of 12th Avenue and West 56th Street. None of the passengers or staff on the boat was injured, but the bow of the ship was damaged.

Officials say the two-story dock, which is also used for parking, was being checked for damage by the Buildings Department. Several southbound lanes on the West Side Highway were closed for emergency vehicles, causing delays to 79th Street.

The Carnival Victory, a nine-story cruise ship, sails to the Bahamas, Canada and New England and the Caribbean. There were 3,272 passengers on board at the time of the incident.
