Man escapes police precinct in Queens

Thursday, August 23, 2007

New York City Police are hunting for a wanted man who jumped out of window and escaped from a South Jamaica, Queens police precinct.

NewsCopter 7 was overhead as cops searched for 27-year-old Maxie Dacosta. He's wanted for questioning in connection with a murder of a 25-year old man who was shot and killed last month.

Eyewitness News reporter Tim Fleischer has the story.

Detectives say Dacosta was left alone briefly in an interview room and managed to slip from his handcuffs leaping from the window to freedom.

He was seen running across the rooftop and jumping down into an alley, where police say he busted through the backdoor of the Bargin Hunters Store pushing down two employees and running out the front door.

Police swarmed the area, spilling out onto Jamaica Avenue where people on the street -- even store owners -- say they had not even seen the suspect, just police.

Dacosta was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, red t-shirt and blue jeans.

By late Thursday night, police teams were preparing for a long night of searching all the places Dacosta was known to frequent. They were armed and ready.
