(Bed-Stuyvesant-WABC, August 31, 2007) (WABC) -- An NYPD officer is now out of the hospital and recovering after being grazed by a gunshot while riding in a patrol car. The shooter, remains on the loose.
Eyewitness News reporter Sarah Wallace has the story from Bed-Stuy with more on the search for the suspect.
It was a minorbut a massive mobilization by the NYPD. The focus of the investigation is the patrol car. The two officers were sitting inside the car at early this morning on Patchen Avenue, when investigators say, a shot was fired from the roof of the nearby Brevoort Houses complex.
Police investigators converged on the patrol car around 5:00 a.m. this morning, as heavily armed emergency service offices swarmed the nearby apartment complex.
One witness said, "I heard something pop, that's all. I don't know if it was one or two, but something just popped."
A 32-year-old officer, now identified as Ryan Burn was in the patrol car with another cop. They were heading northbound on Patchen Ave. near Chauncey.
Burn didn't realize he'd been grazed in the arm through the passenger window, until the two had made a U-turn to head back towards the sound. He was taken to Kings County Hospital as technical teams moved in for a massive manhunt to search for the sniper.
"Whenever you see helicopters you know someone got shot," one local resident said.
Entire blocks were cordoned off for the search as a truck loudspeaker announced a reward.
The "Cop shot" posters were also placed on light poles in the area.
The massive Level 3 mobilization had been scaled back at noon. But detectives are still on the scene knocking on the doors of residents and canvassing the area trying to find the shooter.
The Brevoort Houses is a city housing complex of 13 seven-story buildings. It is home to 894 apartments housing some 2,001 residents.
The development on 17.26-acres was completed August 31, 1955.
