Suspect apprehended after fatal hit & run

Friday, September 14, 2007

A man is struck and killed by a hit and run driver. Police still have not identified the victim, however, the alleged driver is now under arrest.

Eyewitness News is told the victim, who appeared to be in his 30s, was struck on Canal Street at Greene Street just after 1:10 a.m. Authorities responded to several 911 calls for a motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian lying in the roadway.

They rushed the victim to St. Vincent's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Officials say he appeared to be homeless and was not carrying any identification.

According to police, the 51-year-old driver of the red 2006 Chevy Avalanche pick-up truck fled the scene, but was caught at his home in Queens. Charges are pending.
