One killed, eight hurt in Midtown crash

(Midtown - WABC, September 19, 2007) (WABC) -- One person died and eight others injured in a multi-car accident along Fifth Avenue in Midtown Wednesday.

The crash happened at 38th Street and 5th Avenue.

Eyewitness News reporter Jeff Pegues has the latest.

Fifth Avenue was busy as usual when this accident happened.

Eight people were hurt and another died when a gray GMC Yukon slammed into 5th Avenue traffic shortly before 3 p.m.

Witnesses say it all began a block away at the corner of 38th Street and 6th Avenue, where the driver of the GMC got into an argument with another motorist.

The driver then got into his SUV heading east toward 5th Avenue.

"You see him stiffen up," witness Anthony Babino said. "It looked like it was a heart attack. He grabbed his chest and fell back."

Witnesses say fell back into the seat of the SUV, his foot on the accelerator, heading for the intersection.

The GMC hit a black Lincoln Town Car.

'I heard a bang, witness George Green said. "It was a loud bang.''

He heard the impact and the chain reaction crash that followed, involving four cars.

According to FDNY officials, eight people suffered minor injuries, in addition to the fatality.

A mother and her two babies were in one of the vehicles, but were able to walk away from the crash.
