Messages of hate scrawled in Brooklyn

Tuesday, September 25, 2007

The NYPD's Hate Crimes Task Force has launched an investigation in Brooklyn, where swastikas were found painted on several synagogues, homes and cars.

Eyewitness News reporter Tim Fleischer has the story.

Police have flooded the area, searching for suspects in an effort to make an arrest as soon as possible.

Police say the swastikas were found on the Brooklyn Heights Synagogue at 131 Remsen Street and the Congregation B'nai Avraham at 117 Remsen Street. They were reportedly discovered just after 9 p.m. Monday.

Pieces of paper that had swastikas scrawled on them were also found on many cars in the neighborhood.

The foyer of a four-story apartment building at 45 Columbia Place, about a half mile away, was defaced with a four-foot swastika under which was scrawled the message, "Kill Jews."

The mayor's office has condemned the acts.

Kevin Carberry, a real estate agent who found a swastika on his building on Columbia Place, said the vandalism didn't make sense.

"It's irrational and it's sad," he said. "I've lived here all my life and I've never seen anything like this."
