House of cats uncovered in Brooklyn

Tuesday, September 25, 2007

A house packed with cats was uncovered by animal control agents Tuesday.

Dozens and dozens of cats were found inside the home at 718 East 99th street this morning in the Canarsie section of Brooklyn.

But that wasn't the only unusual thing about the home. Eyewitness News reporter Jeff Rossen explains.

Police carried the cats out six at a time, and they made a few trips. More than 30 cats were living inside the home, which neighbors say smelled of feces and was infested with flies.

"Our backyard, we can't use it, because of the flies and the smell," one neighbor said. "It's just overbearing. The window can't be opened. We can't enjoy our house."

Neighbors say the cats had full run of the house. They say the animals slept in relative comfort in the air conditioned house, while the husband and wife slept outside in their vehicles.

Mattress covers and clothing could be seen inside one car, where the wife supposedly slept. The husband allegedly slept in his jeep.

"You know something, I'm sorry for them," the neighbor added. "I think they need help."

As the cats sat in cages in the trunk of a police car, we caught a glimpse of the wife today. Her husband came out outside for a few minutes, to yell.

"You know what's going to happen to the cats," he said. "The ones that are small and cute are going to be adopted, and the older ones are going to get the needle. You know that."

Animal Control officials examined the felines today. Most of them are very sick. So sick, they say, some may have to be put down. But, through a door, the husband said just loves cats.

But it is the smell that got the neighbors angry enough to call the cops. Even the UPS guy was offended, day after day.

"When they open the door, it's horrible," he said. "It's really horrible."

The owners were not charged today, as officials say there is no sign of cruelty.

But animal control officers took most of the cats anyway, calling it a health danger.

There are now only six cats, left to live in what neighbors call the cathouse of Canarsie.
