Woman killed in East Village hit and run

(New York - WABC, September 30, 2007) (WABC) -- A woman hit and killed by a hit and run driver on a busy street in the Noho section of Manhattan.

Now police say they have actually located the car. It took a few hours to find the car.

Police say they found the car and the suspected driver who slammed into 24-year-old, Julia Thomson, as she tried to cross Bowery at east 4th Street.

Eyewitnesses told authorities that it was dark car and perhaps Mercedes. Police found the black Mercedes in Sunnyside, Queens near Queens Boulevard at 73rd Road.

There was massive damage to the windshield and the car was missing a mirror. Witnesses told police the mirror came off when the car hit Julia Thomson.

Police took 21-year-old, Tenzing Bhutai of Forest Hills, into custody and they say he is the suspected driver. He was charged with a drunken driving and with leaving the scene of an accident.

This deadly hit and run happened just after 4 a.m. Sunday morning at Bowery and east 4th Street.

The 24-year-old victim suffered massive head injuries and later died at St. Vincents Hospital.

Several people witnessed the horrific accident.

"First I heard the noise," said witness Shefquad Mahmmoud. "Someone hit with the car."

"He was speeding. He was speeding up to 90-100," said witness Sam Ibraham. "I am so mad, what I see, nobody can see that."

Witnesses say that they were so upset because that car never even slowed down after it hit the young woman.
