Several pedestrians struck when car jumps curb in Brooklyn

Tuesday, October 23, 2007

An out-of-control driver in downtown Brooklyn jumped a curb and hit several pedestrians before crashing into a bus stop Tuesday.

Eyewitness News reporter Joe Torres has more.

The crash started with a double-parked car, a Nissan Maxima. The driver behind the double-parked car needed to get by. He sat on his horn until the woman in the Maxima moved from the passenger seat and got behind the wheel.

Authorities say she backed into a car, and then, in an apparent act of panic, raced through a red light.

Six people suffered non-life threatening injuries when the car careened through a group of pedestians and into a bus shelter.

The chaos ensued around 2:30 p.m. at the crowded intersection of Court Street and Montague Street.

The driver is a 29-year-old female. Police say she did not have a driver's license, only a learner's permit.

The bus shelter was under construction at the time of the crash, and police say this incident could have been much worse.

No charges have been filed, but summonses are expected.
