(Grassmere-WABC, Oct. 31, 2007) (WABC) -- A teen driver is now under arrest. The 19-year-old is accused of hitting a mother with his car, while she was on her way home from work.
Eyewitness News is told the supsect just walked into the 120th precinct in the Richmond Terrace section of Staten Island and turned himself in sometime early Wednesday morning.
Nineteen-year-old Ibraim Aoku was charged with criminally negligent homicide and leaving the scene of an accident. He is now out on bail. This description is quite graphic, but it gives you some perception of the force of the impact. As soon as the car hit the 42-year-old mother, her legs were severed off of her body, thrown clear across Hylan Boulevard, which is a 4-lane road. "I'm sick to my stomach. I'm sick to my stomach now. This girl has a family, she works all day, she's on her way home, going to the bus stop...now her family doesn't have her. I'm sick to my stomach," said victim's customer Ada Calla. 42- year old Maria Alvarenga worked at a nail salon just yards from where she was hit and killed around 8:00 last night. She was crossing Hylan Boulevard toward the bus stop at Sand Lane in Staten Island when witnesses say the teen, Ibraim Aouko was speeding in his Mercedes and hit her. Parts of the car were left behind in the street as police say, the teenager just drove away. "A big thump sound. You know how someone falls and hits their head, it was loud, louder than that. I thought it was just a regular bumper-to-bumper, but as you can see, that happened," said Grassmere resident Lou Karce. Those in the area say speeding drivers have long been a problem here. "The speed limit should be, I think 30 and they do about 50 to 60 mph. It's terrible," said victim's customer Christine Mazzar. As for the victim, a mother of 4, one girl and three sons, worked at her job every single day, just to take care of them. Now they don't have a mom.
